About me
For longtime I used to think to develop my leadership
skills. Even though I had led the teams in my last two companies, I found that
I am weak in few areas. Basically I am shy and not good at communication.
Because of my shyness and communication, my growth was very
slow.
Many times I thought to improve my leadership ability. When
I had interest, I did not have proper resources. When I had recourse, I did not
have interest.
End of the last year (2013), I felt importance of leadership
skills in my life. So I decided to learn them.
Last week I attended one "Leadership Development
Program", which was contacted by my office.
End of the program, the trainer suggested some books to
read. So we bought 16 books and shared them among us.
As my share, I got "Developing the leader within
you" by John C. Maxwell. It was already sold over 1,000,000 copies.
About Author
John has more than twenty five years experience in teaching
leadership principles. He conducts the training USA and Europe countries. He is
a winner of New York Times Best-Selling Author of "The 21 irrefutable laws
of leadership and failing forward".
About Book
I went through this book once I received this. The book has
been written with simple English with suitable examples.
It contains 10 chapters with 200 pages.
I want to summarize the points from each chapter and post
here. This may be good introduction about this book to read in future.
Introduction
First let’s see the summary of the Introduction of this
book.
Author John says,
“Everything rises and falls on leadership.”“You cannot produce consistently on a level higher than your leadership.”“Leadership is not an exclusive club for those who were "born with in"”.“Leadership is developed, not discovered.”
He categorized leadership as four levels. Those are
1. The Leading Leader
2. The Learned Leader
3. The Latent Leader
4. The Limited Leader
He says “everyone in the world will fit in one of four above
categories”.
He continues,
“So many books are available for improving leadership, but
very few only really speak about leadership. Rest of them teaches only
management.”
He defines different between leadership and management as
follows,
"Management is the process of assuring that the program
and objectives of the organization are implemented. On the other hand,
Leadership has to do with casting vision and motivating people."
"People don't want to be managed, but they want to be
lead."
Note
I took only the juice from the introduction. You can buy
this book online and read.
Please wait for first chapter "The Definition of Leadership
- INFLUENCE"
Feel free to comment your suggestion which will be
great encouragement to write more.
Thank you.
